Be On the Lookout for Carbon Monoxide

This blog is simply a reminder about Carbon Monoxide.  Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly.  Carbon monoxide can come from furnaces, fires, car exhaust, and many other ways.  Some early symptoms of Carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, nausea, and fatigue.  Unfortunately, these symptoms are very general and can be mistaken for many other illnesses such as the flu.  Prolonged exposure to Carbon monoxide can lead to brain damage and even death.  The symptoms are more severe depending upon the concentration of carbon monoxide in the air.

In order to prevent this, a carbon monoxide detector is not just a great idea, but it’s a necessity.  These detectors are invaluable since there is no other way to detect carbon monoxide.  It is advised that you have at least one on every floor of your home.  Feel free to comment or call Flame about purchasing a Carbon Monoxide Detector for your health and for your safety.

Zoned Cooling

During the evening, when you are not using a room, such as your bedroom, you probably remember the importance of keeping the lights off. It is a waste of money and energy to leave a light on in a room that you are not using.  So it seems kind of silly to leave the heating or air conditioning on in a room that you are not using, right? This too is true. Read the rest of this entry »

How Flame Can Help Your Allergies!

Spring is in the air…kind of.  Some days it feels like Spring and other days it feels like the middle of Winter again.  However, Spring is here even if it does not always seem like it.  With Spring comes picnics, the end of school, and allergies.  Many peoples’ allergies increase in the Fall and Spring and Flame wants to do its part to help you out!

  •  Consider having your ducts cleaned by a trained professional.  Look out for NADCA certified ones (National Air Duct Cleaning Association), because they will be well qualified to do the job!  Having your ducts cleaned can take out all the dirt and mold that has been sitting up there and the mold that is blown throughout your home.
  • Have a UV Germicidal Light installed!  These are installed within your HVAC system and they can catch/kill what your regular filter does not.  It can greatly reduce the amount of allergens in your home.
  • Make sure you have an air filter in your HVAC system, HEPA or high efficiency particulate air filters are the best.  Filters also need to cleaned or changed regularly.
  • Air conditioning also helps to reduce allergens by making it less necessary for you to open your window to let in cooler air which in turn lets in less pollen.  Also, air conditioning reduces humidity and therefore reduces dust mites!
  • Vacuum regularly-once to twice weekly. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter because it will trap more allergens.
  • If you are allergic to dust mites-put plastic or zippered allergen impermeable covers on all mattresses, pillows and box springs!

For some of these tips, such as the mattress covers you may want to ask your doctor, but for things such as air conditioning and duct cleaning-Flame will be happy to answer any of your questions with helpful and useful knowledge.

Do Not Be Scared by the Price of a Geothermal Heating System!

Many times you have to spend money in order to make money.  Well sometimes you also have to spend money in order to save money.  A geothermal heat pump is an example of this.

Geothermal heat pumps are incredibly energy efficient. They can use up to 50% less energy than your typical heating and cooling system! They also last for a long time; up to 25 years.  The best news is that Flame is now selling and installing them. Though they cost more than the average heating and cooling system, you can earn the money back with all the savings your are making within 5 to10 years.

That may seem like a long time, but there’s a good chance that the new “energy efficient trend” in the world will not change soon.  Do not get frightened by the price of a geothermal heating system because you will earn the money back and save plenty of money, along with helping the earth.  For more information, call Flame or check out what the U.S. Department of Energy has to say at this website:  http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/consumer/your_home/space_heating_cooling/index.cfm/mytopic=12640

Federal Tax Credits: Even More Ways to Save Money!

If you read this blog a lot, you are probably aware that I often write about saving money. Honestly, who doesn’t like to save money especially during these truly challenging economic times?  Recently, the government put a new “Federal Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency” in place for 2009 and 2010.  This will be great!  There will be federal tax credits for 30% of the cost for up to $1,500 (if 30% of the product you bought is higher than $1,500, you will not receive more money than $1,500) for the following products:

  •  Insulation
  • Windows and Doors
  • Roofs (Asphalt and Metal)
  • Water Heaters (non-solar)
  • HVAC
  • Biomass Stoves

You have to be careful, because not all new products guarantee that you receive the tax credits.  Make sure to check that they do, because they have to have a high enough energy efficiency.  Not all Energy Star products apply!http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=products.pr_tax_credits <- check out this website for all the information on what works and what doesn’t. There is even better news!  For other certain types of products you can receive a Tax Credit for up to 30% of the cost with no upper limit continuing through 2016.  The products that this pertains to include the following:

  • Geothermal Heat Pumps
  • Solar Panels
  • Solar Water Heaters
  • Small Wind Energy Systems
  • Fuel Cells

Remember!  There are some restrictions. Be sure and check out the above website for more information. Also, you can read the Detroit Free Press article regarding this issue, and it features Flame Furnace:  http://www.freep.com/article/20090308/BUSINESS04/903080312/1017/BUSINESS/Mak

Flame’s 60th Anniversary

It is 2009 and that means that Flame Furnace has been in business for 60 years!  The company was started in 1949 by Robert Marowske and it has stayed in the family ever since.  While the business was first starting, Robert worked hard on and off the clock to keep his hope and dream going full steam ahead. Flame has grown a lot since then, but it still embodies the same values and integrity that it did when it first began.  In order to celebrate its 60th Anniversary it is giving some things away.  You can call Flame to find out more about the company and its 60th Anniversary!

How to buy an Air Conditioner

It is March 2nd and it is freezing!  When is Spring going to come?  Though it may seem like summer is really far away, now would be the best time to start thinking about a new air conditioner. The reason being that you do not want to wait until that first 90 degree day in June and be sweating in your warm home. Also, in many instances you can get units for a lower price at this time of year. There are certain things that you should do when looking into an air conditioner.

  •  You may want to enlist the help of a professional, like one of Flame’s Comfort Consultants, who can help to pick out the right unit for your home.
  • The size is very important, and if your air conditioner is too big for your home, you are just wasting energy because you don’t need that much cool air in your home.  If it is too small, your home will not cool down as well, and the unit will be working extra hard to try to get it cool, and that can also waste energy and money. Therefore, you should make sure that your air conditioner is properly fitted and in tune with your home.
  • Energy Efficiency- Do you want to go green with your air conditioner?  If you do, remember it can also help with saving you money.  There are different air conditioners that are more or less energy efficient.  A way to tell is by looking at the SEER number.  This number is a measure of air conditioner efficiency, and the higher the number, the more efficient the system is.  On Bryant’s, the highest SEER number is 20 and that is the best number possible.
  • Another thing to consider, especially if you’re looking into a Bryant Air Conditioner, is the series of the air conditioner.
