Ahh..finally metro Detroit is being covered in a fresh blanket of snow. This was a beautiful sight to wake up to, until you remember that in order to finish your Christmas shopping you need to get out of your snow covered driveway. This can be a huge downer on your “Christmas-y” day. Flame offers a solution to this! (No they will not send you a shipment of teenagers to do your shoveling for you). Consider a heated driveway.
This heated driveway will be heated by radiant heat which means that the driveway would be heated from underneath either by hot water or electrically. This same technology can be used in your home under your floors or in your walls as another way to heat your home. Here are some reasons why you may want a heated driveway:
- Less chance of slipping or falling on ice or snow (which means less chance of injury)
- No more sore back, arms and hands from shoveling!
- A heated driveway keeps your driveway in better condition because your salt use on the driveway should be reduced
- Can finish Christmas shopping quicker by not having to take the time to shovel before you leave!
Snow can be wonderful and some of us forget that because of the work it brings. A heated driveway will offer you all the things mentioned above and it may also give you the opportunity to enjoy snow again. Contact Flame if you have any questions, and with a heated driveway you can relax (a little) during this season and appreciate the “most wonderful time of the year!”

Ho Ho Ho! This season is filled with busy-ness, shopping, cookies and cocoa! Amidst the hustle and bustle there is often a lot of money being spent. With this happening, perhaps the best Christmas present could be a way to save money: such as a geothermal heat pump.
A geothermal heat pump is a new way to heat and cool your home. Basically it involves utilizing natural energy from the ground which makes it very energy efficient. Though these systems are more expensive than a typical furnace and/or air conditioner, Energy Star states that, “the cost difference will be paid back over time through lower energy bills.” Not only will you save money with lower bills, but certain geothermal heat pumps are also eligible for a 30 percent tax credit. In order to get this-make sure your pump has an “Energy Star.”
Though books, movies, clothes, toys and games are enjoyed perhaps the most appreciated present is one that both helps to save the earth-and your wallet! Contact Flame for more information! Or check out the Energy Star website, where I got much of this info!

Who doesn’t love getting some money back from the government? Good news, there is another way to get a tax return. You hot water heater may allow you to get 30% back on it up to $1,500. However, there are some stipulations:
- This tax credit is only in effect right now. Meaning that your hot water heater must be installed in your home between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.
- Also, it can’t just be any old water heater-it has to be efficient. Your water heater must have an Energy Factor of .82 or higher or a thermal efficiency level of 90%.
- Electric storage tank water heaters and electric tankless water heaters are not eligible for this rebate.
As you can see, the best time to purchase a new efficient hot water heater is NOW! If you have more questions, check out where most of this info is from, the Energy Star website: Energy Star

High winds are hitting Michigan! These could result in fallen branches, fallen wreaths and even fallen power lines. As the temperatures are dropping this is not when you want your electricity going out. Keep in mind that a whole house generator can prevent problems that power outages can cause.

During this time of year, cold temperatures are not the only problem! You may be baking and cooking in preparation for the holidays or you may have lots of family and guests staying with you. Zero electricity and half baked cookies and grandparents does not always make the best combination. There are various sizes of whole home generators that can power a variety of appliances and these generators come with an automatic transfer switch. This means that when the power goes out the generator automatically turns on-you do not even have to worry!
So if you really want to buy yourself and family a great Christmas present, invest in a generator that can help you keep your cool during the Christmas season! Contact Flame for more information.

“Green” and Energy Efficiency seem to be the hot words lately. However, sometimes it is hard to comprehend what they mean and what percentages mean what etc… Flame is here to help explain to you about energy efficient furnaces.
Furnaces are rated with an “AFUE” number. This stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. The number will most likely be a two digit number such as 80. An AFUE rating of 80 or 80% means that for every dollar you spend-80 cents will go towards heating your home, while 20 cents is wasted. (20 cents may not seem like a lot but try multiplying that by more than 1 dollar!)
Currently, any new furnace installed has to have at least 80% AFUE. Yet, if you have an older home and furnace you may want to find out about its efficiency, because there are still lower AFUE furnaces (like 50%) out there! Some furnaces can get up to around 96% AFUE which is significantly better than 80%. The higher the AFUE, the more efficient it is and the greater the savings. (Keep in mind that a higher AFUE furnace will probably cost some more initially).
Now that you know all about Energy Efficient Furnaces and AFUE, you can get out their looking (or impress your friends and family with your knowledge) Contact Flame if you have any questions or comments!
Also check out this website! “Understanding AFUE Ratings” by Alan King where some of this info came from!
