Recessed Lights are Big Energy Losers

Buying a home, building a home, or redecorating a home-when working on one of these tasks, there are many decisions that have to be made.  The decisions could range from the color of paint on the walls to the type of faucet on the sink.  The really important decisions to consider are the ones that affect your home’s energy efficiency.  Certain features of homes can be bigger energy losers than others.  Recessed lighting, also known as can lights or high hats, is one such feature.

The design of the recessed lights causes them to become very hot.  Therefore, holes are drilled in the top of the fixture to help release some of that heat. Unfortunately, those holes also release your home’s heated or air conditioned air.  This makes them a very big energy loser in the home (Dr. Energy Saver Home Services).

The good news is that you don’t necessarily have to choose between recessed lighting or an energy efficient home.  There is a way to place insulation caps over the top of the unseen part of the fixture, which will help to reduce the amount of air that is lost.
